Position Summary

We are hiring an experienced Sales Manager to lead and oversee the sales operations in our Negombo region. This role involves managing a team, setting realistic sales targets, developing territory-specific strategies, and ensuring that day-to-day sales activities are executed effectively and ethically. The ideal candidate will be someone who understands the local market, knows how to build and maintain relationships, and has a steady track record of managing a team toward measurable results.

This position is suited for someone who is not looking for shortcuts or motivational catchphrases but understands the hard work and consistency required in running a sales operation.


Core Responsibilities

1. Team Management

  • Supervise a team of sales representatives, including recruitment, onboarding, training, and ongoing performance management.
  • Set individual sales targets based on territory performance and team capability.
  • Monitor progress daily and weekly, and provide practical feedback to help team members meet their goals.
  • Ensure adherence to company policies, pricing guidelines, and reporting protocols.

2. Sales Operations

  • Oversee and coordinate all sales activities within the assigned region.
  • Ensure that product/service knowledge across the team is current and accurate.
  • Track and manage sales pipeline activities using the designated system or CRM.
  • Regularly review and audit sales reports, client interactions, and deal closures to maintain transparency and accountability.

3. Market Development

  • Identify and pursue new sales opportunities in both existing and untapped markets.
  • Collect field-level data on customer preferences, competitor activity, and market trends.
  • Recommend adjustments to sales strategies or pricing models based on accurate local insights.
  • Maintain a detailed understanding of the Negombo commercial environment, including seasonal changes, demographic trends, and infrastructure developments.

4. Client Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain long-term relationships with key clients, distributors, and partners.
  • Resolve customer complaints promptly and appropriately, escalating when necessary.
  • Negotiate contracts and agreements, ensuring that all terms are clearly documented and adhered to.
  • Visit top accounts regularly to maintain service quality and business continuity.

5. Reporting and Analysis

  • Submit weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports summarizing team performance, revenue, challenges, and upcoming opportunities.
  • Review sales forecasts versus actual performance and explain any significant variances.
  • Provide grounded recommendations for resource allocation, staffing, and promotional efforts.

6. Compliance and Ethics

  • Ensure all team activities are aligned with legal, ethical, and company-specific guidelines.
  • Maintain proper documentation of all transactions and customer communications.
  • Address any internal misconduct or sales manipulation swiftly and according to procedure.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Management, or a related field.
  • A diploma in sales or marketing is acceptable if combined with substantial experience.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in sales, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Familiarity with the Western Province, particularly Negombo and surrounding areas, is an advantage.

Technical Skills:

  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and email communication.
  • Experience with CRM tools (e.g., Zoho, Salesforce) is preferred.
  • Valid driving license and willingness to travel within the region as needed.

  • Travel: Up to 60% local travel, including rural and semi-urban areas.

Performance Expectations

  • Train the team on any observed skill gaps or knowledge issues.
  • Review current sales materials and recommend updates if necessary.

By the 6-month mark, we expect:

  • Sales performance to stabilize with a predictable pipeline.
  • At least 70% of the team consistently meeting individual monthly targets.
  • Improved client retention and decreased unresolved complaints.
