Medical Representative – Kandy

Job Description: Medical Representative – Kandy

We are looking for a Medical Representative to join our pharmaceutical sales team in Kandy. This role is suited for someone who understands the importance of building professional relationships with healthcare providers and is motivated by clear targets and outcomes. You will serve as the bridge between our company’s medical products and the professionals who prescribe or recommend them.

As a representative of our brand, your work will influence how medical professionals perceive our offerings—and, more importantly, how those offerings benefit patients. This role requires persistence, reliability, ethical conduct, and the ability to absorb and communicate technical product knowledge effectively.

Position Summary:

The Medical Representative is responsible for promoting and selling pharmaceutical products to doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies within a designated territory. Your success will depend on how well you understand the products, the needs of healthcare professionals, and how consistently you can maintain strong, respectful relationships in your assigned area.

The role is field-based. While you will report to a supervisor or regional manager, much of your time will be spent independently visiting clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies. A confident, self-driven individual who can work without close supervision will thrive in this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Product Promotion: Educate doctors, pharmacists, and healthcare professionals on the benefits, usage, dosage, and side effects of our product portfolio.
  • Client Visits: Make scheduled daily visits to assigned healthcare institutions within your territory. Document all interactions accurately.
  • Territory Management: Plan and execute coverage of your territory efficiently, ensuring consistent contact with key medical practitioners.
  • Sales Targets: Meet or exceed monthly and quarterly sales targets by promoting assigned products strategically and ethically.
  • Market Feedback: Collect and report feedback on competitor products, pricing, and market activities to the management team.
  • Stock Monitoring: Ensure that pharmacies and hospitals within your territory have adequate product availability.
  • Event Participation: Represent the company during medical conferences, product launches, and promotional campaigns when required.
  • Reporting: Submit daily call reports and weekly territory progress updates using company-approved formats or platforms.
  • Compliance: Follow all regulatory and company guidelines in promoting products, ensuring all interactions remain ethical and in line with company standards.
  • Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong professional rapport with doctors, specialists, and hospital procurement teams.
  • Training: Continuously update product knowledge through training sessions and self-study as product lines evolve.

Required Qualifications:

  • Successfully completed GCE A/Ls (preferably in Science stream).
  • A diploma or certificate in pharmaceutical sales, biology, or a related field is an advantage.
  • Valid motorbike riding license (with own motorbike or willingness to travel extensively).
  • Strong communication skills in English and Sinhala (Tamil is an added asset).
  • Basic computer literacy for reporting and communication.
  • Ability to understand and convey technical product details clearly and accurately.
  • Prior experience in sales or field-based roles is desirable, but not essential.

Preferred Attributes:

  • A consistent and self-motivated approach to daily work.
  • Confidence in initiating conversations with doctors and pharmacists.
  • The discipline to maintain call cycles and meet targets without constant supervision.
  • Integrity in dealing with sensitive and regulated pharmaceutical products.
  • Ability to absorb medical information and communicate it in a practical, clear manner.
  • Organized approach to daily schedules and route planning.
  • Patience and persistence—key qualities in building long-term professional relationships.
  • An understanding of customer service principles, especially in healthcare settings.

Work Conditions:

  • Field-based position covering Kandy and surrounding regions.
  • Standard working hours: Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend work during events or campaigns.
  • Expect to be on the road for a majority of the day visiting clients.
  • Travel expenses, mobile phone allowance, and other work-related support will be provided.
  • Reports and communication to be submitted electronically at the end of each workday.
  • Regular team meetings will be held in person or virtually for updates and training.

What We Expect From You:

  • You will be the face of our company to healthcare professionals. We expect you to represent us with honesty, professionalism, and consistency.
  • You must manage your time effectively and cover your assigned territory reliably.
  • We expect timely, complete, and accurate reporting of all activities.
  • You should be open to training and feedback, both of which are part of our continuous improvement culture.
  • We value ethical conduct. You are expected to abide by all internal policies, industry guidelines, and regulatory standards.
  • We look for someone who does not wait for reminders to act. Proactivity is a key trait we respect.

What You Can Expect From Us:

  • Clear guidance on your territory, expectations, and product information.
  • Comprehensive onboarding training, including shadowing experienced representatives if needed.
  • A structured work environment with regular check-ins but room for independence.
  • Fair compensation, including a fixed salary, travel reimbursement, and performance-based incentives.
  • Regular product and skills development training.
  • A management team that is accessible, clear in its communication, and supportive of your professional growth.
  • Recognition for consistent performance and integrity in how you do your work.
  • A career path for those interested in advancing to senior roles in medical sales, training, or regional coordination.

Who Should Apply:

  • Recent school leavers or diploma holders with strong communication skills and a willingness to learn.
  • Sales professionals looking to transition into the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry.
  • Field sales reps tired of vague targets and looking for clear direction and support.
  • Individuals who want a structured, professional career where effort is recognized and results matter.
  • Applicants based in or around Kandy, or those willing to relocate with knowledge of the local area and its healthcare landscape.

Application Process:

  1. Send your CV and a short cover letter explaining your interest in this role.
  2. Mention your availability, preferred start date, and whether you have access to a motorbike.
  3. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an initial telephone interview.
  4. Selected candidates will attend a face-to-face interview followed by a basic written/product knowledge test.
  5. Final selection will be based on performance, territory fit, and references.
