Position Overview
We are seeking a capable and results-oriented Business Development Team Lead to guide a team of business development professionals in Colombo. The ideal candidate brings experience in sales strategy, client engagement, and team leadership. This role demands a hands-on approach to expanding our market presence, improving client relationships, and ensuring the business development team operates with discipline and focus.
This is not a role for someone looking to stay behind a desk. You will be responsible for leading from the front—setting targets, monitoring team performance, guiding the sales funnel, and being directly involved in key account acquisition. The goal is to grow revenue while maintaining a clear sense of responsibility, structure, and client trust.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership
- Supervise and support a team of 5–10 Business Development Executives.
- Set daily, weekly, and monthly targets in alignment with organizational revenue goals.
- Provide structured coaching, feedback, and on-the-job training to help team members improve their approach and meet expectations.
- Conduct regular performance reviews and identify opportunities for professional development.
- Serve as a point of escalation for client concerns and internal operational challenges.
Sales & Market Strategy
- Develop and implement sales strategies tailored to local market conditions in Colombo and surrounding regions.
- Analyze market trends and identify new sectors, industries, or client profiles that align with the company’s offerings.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to shape strategic direction based on market feedback and performance metrics.
- Monitor competitors and adjust the approach where necessary to maintain a competitive edge.
Client Management
- Support your team in securing new accounts, from lead qualification to deal closure.
- Maintain a portfolio of high-value clients and ensure retention and satisfaction.
- Attend client meetings with team members to provide guidance and ensure consistent quality in presentations and proposals.
- Work with internal departments (e.g., operations, product, finance) to ensure smooth delivery of services post-sales.
Operational Excellence
- Track and report on team metrics: leads generated, conversion rates, pipeline health, and overall sales performance.
- Use CRM tools to manage leads, sales activities, and reporting. Ensure the team maintains accurate and timely records.
- Improve team processes, reduce inefficiencies, and ensure compliance with internal policies.
- Liaise with marketing to align campaigns with business goals and provide insight into campaign effectiveness from a sales perspective.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Management, or a related field.
- Minimum 4–6 years of experience in business development or B2B sales.
- At least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role, with direct responsibility for team performance.
- Strong understanding of sales pipelines, prospecting techniques, and client lifecycle management.
- Familiarity with CRM tools (e.g., Salesforce, HubSpot, Zoho) and standard reporting tools (Excel, Google Sheets).
- Fluency in English and Sinhala. Tamil is an advantage.

- Team turnover is low, and morale remains steady under your leadership.
- New markets or customer segments are identified and successfully converted into revenue streams.
What Success Looks Like in This Role
- First 30 days: You’ll focus on understanding the team, current sales strategies, and key accounts. You’ll shadow client meetings, assess team strengths, and begin to map out where changes may be necessary.
- First 90 days: You will lead regular check-ins, introduce a refined reporting system, and take ownership of the team’s short-term targets. Early client wins under your guidance will begin to surface.
- By 6 months: You will be leading strategic initiatives to improve sales performance, developing future leaders in your team, and contributing to the company’s overall growth in the Colombo market.
