Systems Engineer – katunayake

Job Description: Systems Engineer – katunayake

We are currently hiring a Systems Engineer for our operations in Katunayake. This is a hands-on role that involves maintaining and improving the company’s IT systems. You will be responsible for managing servers, network infrastructure, and software systems, ensuring that they run reliably and efficiently. The role requires both technical competence and a disciplined approach to routine tasks, troubleshooting, and documentation.

This role is ideal for someone who prefers structured problem-solving, values system stability, and knows how to prioritize long-term reliability over quick fixes.

Position Summary

As a Systems Engineer, your main responsibility will be to ensure that the company’s IT infrastructure—including servers, networks, storage, and cloud-based systems—is operational, secure, and up to date. You will work within an established IT team and collaborate with departments across the company to support both day-to-day operations and larger infrastructure projects.

This is not a desk-only role. You will be expected to move between workstations, server rooms, and operational departments when required. Your work will be measured by uptime, resolution time, documentation accuracy, and adherence to industry best practices.

Key Responsibilities

1. System Administration

  • Monitor, manage, and maintain physical and virtual servers, including Windows and Linux-based systems.
  • Administer Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and file systems.
  • Apply security patches, firmware updates, and system upgrades in a timely manner.

2. Network Maintenance

  • Configure and troubleshoot LAN/WAN equipment, routers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Ensure stable internet connectivity and secure access across the organization.
  • Monitor network traffic and system usage to detect and address issues.

3. Technical Support & Troubleshooting

  • Provide second- and third-line support for hardware, software, and network-related incidents.
  • Document and resolve escalated helpdesk tickets with clear timelines and outcomes.
  • Support end-user environments including desktops, printers, VOIP phones, and mobile devices.

4. Backup and Recovery

  • Manage scheduled backups and verify restoration procedures are functional.
  • Ensure backup systems (local or cloud-based) are properly maintained.
  • Respond to incidents involving data recovery or disaster recovery protocols.

5. Security and Compliance

  • Enforce system access protocols and maintain logs for audits.
  • Assist in compliance activities such as system audits, vulnerability assessments, and internal policy reviews.
  • Monitor and mitigate system threats using security tools.

6. Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain up-to-date documentation for infrastructure, systems configuration, and procedures.
  • Prepare monthly reports on system health, downtime, ticket resolution trends, and asset lifecycle.
  • Create checklists and SOPs for routine and emergency tasks.

Required Qualifications

  • A diploma or degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar systems/network administration role.
  • Hands-on experience with Windows Server (2016/2019), Linux environments, and Active Directory.
  • Working knowledge of routers, switches, firewalls, and basic routing protocols.
  • Experience with backup software (e.g., Veeam, Acronis, or similar).
  • Familiarity with virtualization platforms like VMware or Hyper-V.
  • Good command of written and spoken English. Sinhala and/or Tamil is an advantage.

Preferred Attributes

  • Practical approach to solving technical issues—methodical and persistent.
  • Strong organizational skills with a commitment to documentation and process.
  • Comfortable with both planned and reactive work (e.g., patch management and incident response).
  • Self-sufficient with day-to-day tasks but willing to escalate when needed.
  • Calm under pressure, especially during system failures or outages.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new tools and infrastructure over time.

Work Conditions

  • Based at our Katunayake office and data center facilities.
  • Standard working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
  • May require early morning, late night, or weekend work during planned maintenance or emergencies.
  • Required to be on-call for after-hours technical incidents (on a rotational basis).
  • PPE and safety protocols must be followed when working in certain areas of the facility.

What We Expect From You

  • You are accountable for your systems. If something goes wrong, you don’t pass the blame—you investigate and fix it.
  • You keep things organized—logs, documentation, and follow-up actions are clear and updated.
  • You know when to work independently and when to ask for support.
  • You are not looking to “try things out” in a live environment—testing and planning come first.
  • You treat all systems (no matter how small) with the same level of care and attention.

What You Can Expect From Us

  • A stable role within a company that values reliability and structure over showmanship.
  • Access to modern infrastructure and tools—no outdated systems for the sake of cost-cutting.
  • A team that respects clear communication, defined procedures, and practical outcomes.
  • Support from senior staff to help you improve your technical depth over time.
  • Fair compensation, recognition for quality work, and opportunities to expand your responsibilities as you grow.

Who Should Apply

This position is suitable for:

  • Systems engineers or administrators with experience in small to mid-sized infrastructure setups.
  • Technicians looking to move into a more structured engineering role.
  • IT professionals who prefer preventive maintenance and logical troubleshooting over “band-aid” solutions.
  • Those who are based in or around Katunayake, or willing to relocate/commute consistently.

Avoid applying if:

  • You are looking for a fully remote position.
  • You are uncomfortable with hands-on tasks involving hardware.
  • You prefer design, development, or other creative tech roles. This is a systems-focused role.

Application Process

To apply, please submit:

  • A detailed CV with your relevant experience, qualifications, and certifications.
  • A brief cover letter describing one system issue you’ve resolved independently—and how you approached it.
  • Contact details for two professional references.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to complete a technical assessment and attend an in-person or virtual interview. Depending on the role, an onsite visit may be requested.
